SF Pride still on track…for now

As businesses continue to be shuttered or forced to reduce capacity in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19, and large outdoor events continue to be cancelled, San Francisco Pride has issued a statement indicating that they continue to prepare for the 50th annual Pride celebration in June in hopes that the spread of the epidemic will have been resolved by then.

Their statement reads:

March 9, 2020

As many of you are aware, last week the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) announced assertive recommendations for large gatherings to help reduce the spread of Coronavirus, or COVID-19, over the next two weeks.

San Francisco Pride continues to eagerly plan for our 50th annual Celebration and Parade, to be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 27-28. The safety of our communities is our main priority. We are working diligently with our partners and city agencies to ensure that our communities can enjoy the celebration in a healthy way.

Along with our friends at SFDPH, we ask everyone for now to follow the common-sense best practices that have been recommended, particularly for those in populations most vulnerable:

San Francisco Pride will continue to monitor the developments of this emerging situation and will follow any directives from the City and SFDPH as they develop.

San Francisco Pride statement, March 9, 2020

SF Pride celebrations are always held on the last full weekend of June in commemoration of the Stonewall Riots in 1969. San Francisco’s first Pride events began the year after the riots, in 1970. The 50th anniversary celebration is currently scheduled for June 27-28, 2020.
